Computing hitting times via fluid approximation: application to the coupon collector problem
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we show how to use stochastic approximation to compute hitting time of a stochastic process, based on the study of the time for a fluid approximation of this process to be at distance 1/N of its fixed point. This approach is developed to study a generalized version of the coupon collector problem. The system is composed by N independent identical Markov chains. At each time step, one Markov chain is picked at random and performs one transition. We show that the time at which all chains have hit the same state is bounded by c1N logN + c2N log logN + O(N) where c1 and c2 are two constants depending on eigenvalues of the Markov chain.

A general approach to linguistic approximation and its application in frame of fuzzy logic deduction
This paper deals with one problem that needs to be addressed in the emerging field known under the name computing with perceptions. It is the problem of describing, approximately, a given fuzzy set in natural language. This problem has lately been referred to as the problem of retranslation. An approaches to dealing with the retranslation problem is discussed in the paper, that ...
متن کاملCoupon Collector Problem for Non-Uniform Coupons and Random Quotas
We extend the classical coupon collector problem to find the expected number of selections needed to collect mi (possible random) copies of coupon i, when the distribution of the coupons is not necessarily equally likely. Upper and lower bounds which provide limiting asymptotics are also obtained for the expected number of selections needed to fulfill a random quota for each coupon.
متن کاملThe Generalized Coupon Collector Problem
Coupons are collected one at a time from a population containing n distinct types of coupon. The process is repeated until all n coupon have been collected and the total number of draws, Y , from the population is recorded. It is assumed that the draws from the population are independent and identically distributed (draws with replacement) according to a probability distribution X with the prob...
متن کاملSome upper and lower bounds on the coupon collector problem
The classical coupon collector problem is closely related to probabilistic-packet-marking (PPM) schemes for IP traceback problem in the Internet. In this paper, we study the classical coupon collector problem, and derive some upper and lower bounds of the complementary cumulative distribution function (ccdf) of the number of objects (coupons) that one has to check in order to detect a set of di...
متن کاملOn functional limit theorems for the cumulative times in alternating renewal processes
We provide new proofs for two functional central limit theorems, and prove strong approximations for the cumulative “on” times in alternating renewal processes. The proofs rely on a first-passage-time representation of the cumulative “on” time process. As an application, we establish strong approximations for the queueing process in a single-server fluid queue with “on–off” sources.
